Remedial or Generative Coaching?

Remedial and generative coaching represent two distinct approaches within the coaching field, each with its own focus, goals, and methodologies. Understanding these differences is crucial when choosing the most appropriate coaching style to meet the needs of individuals, groups, teams, and businesses.


Remedial Coaching

  • Focus: Remedial coaching primarily addresses performance issues or specific challenges being faced. It is often corrective in nature, aimed at fixing problems or closing gaps in skills or knowledge.

  • Goal: The main goal is to improve current performance levels or resolve specific issues that are hindering effectiveness. This type of coaching often targets short-term needs.

  • Approach: It tends to be more directive, with the coach providing guidance, feedback, and sometimes instruction to help overcome challenges.

  • Context: Remedial coaching is frequently initiated by managers or human resource departments, or indeed by an individual, a team member, or team leader, when expectations are not being met, or when support is needed in specific areas.

  • Outcome: Success is typically measured by the resolution of the identified issues and improvement in performance or behaviour.


Generative Coaching


  • Focus: Generative coaching focuses on the development of potential, fostering personal and professional growth beyond current issues. It aims to build capabilities, adaptability, and resilience.

  • Goal: The goal is longer-term development, enhancing the ability to navigate future challenges, seize opportunities, and achieve broader outcomes and aspirations.

  • Approach: This style is more exploratory and co-creative, with the coach and client working together to uncover insights, possibilities, and pathways for growth. The coach often uses powerful questions to facilitate discovery and learning.

  • Context: Generative coaching is usually sought by individuals, groups, teams, and organisations looking to invest in their future potential, leadership development, or to foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

  • Outcome: Success is measured in terms of growth, expanded awareness, and the achievement of longer-term objectives as part of a long term plan. It's about building a foundation for sustained success and adaptability.


Both remedial and generative coaching serve vital roles within the coaching spectrum, catering to different needs and objectives. Often engaged first, remedial coaching is problem-focused, aimed at addressing immediate issues, while generative coaching is growth-oriented, designed to unlock future potential. A skilled coach can navigate between these approaches or blend them as needed, providing targeted support to address current challenges while fostering an environment for ongoing development and success.
